This home located at 506 Wabash Ave is located in the historic neighborhood of Pendelton Heights, a beautiful neighborhood that is considered the first suburb of Kansas City proper. Pendelton Heights has a large concentration of Queen Anne Victorian’s. This property is located near the beautiful and also historic scenic byway known as Cliff Drive.

506 Wabash was built around 1888 for a physician, Valcolon W. Mather by Western Lumber Company. By 1893, John W. Merrill, manager of the Big Four Tea and Coffee Company, owned the homeWhen Mr. Merrill died in 1917, he was credited as being “the owner of the oldest clock in the country” (Which at the time, was nearly 300 years old), owner of “21,000 letters from men who have made political history in the United States” as well as a collector of antiquities.

The current homeowners found articles that affectionately refer to the home as “the house of relics”. Mr. Merrill was an enigmatic businessman who lived in Kansas City for more than 30 years.

This ornate Queen Anne Victorian still has a lot of the original characters with some updates for the modern times. You can find stained glass windows, cherry and walnut wood detailing, pocket doors and a bay window in the front parlor.

It was said that there was a back private entrance (has since been closed off), that allowed the doctor’s patients to enter into a room to be seen and treated. There are some remnants of that left which can be seen from the back porch.

You start by walking up to the massive covered front porch that is 14′ tall and extends across the entire front of the home. There are some gardens out front that you can enjoy while sipping coffee and watching the world go by.

You enter into the grand hall that features a fireplace, white tin ceilings, and a grand staircase fit for a movie set! The house of relics sign above the fireplace was created as an homage to the original owners of the property. This massive red mirror is permanently attached to the wall in the entryway.

Laundry is also located on this floor with its own private balcony and loads of space!

This is the staircase leading to the third floor with another landing with a reading nook.

One of the bedrooms on the third floor was changed to a studio but still features a raised bed located in the front window. Beautiful built in bookcases, workspace, and just a nice space to complete work or escape the world. The final resting place is the massive two-story carriage house located in the back, off of the courtyard.

The back carriage house has been partially converted into a separate living quarters. There were also plans to put in a kitchen and a bathroom which hasn’t been completed.
